A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Peru's southern Ayacucho region this Thursday, August 20, without preliminary reports of fatalities or significant material damage, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP).

LIMA, Peru (AP) — Archaeologists in Peru on Tuesday unveiled the skeletal remains of an adult they believe was buried as an offering near the base of Huaca Pucllana, an ancient adobe pyramid in Lima, the nation’s capital.

A huge earthquake has rocked Peru as the city of Ica faces the brunt of the 7.2 magnitude tremors. The quake struck at a depth of 10km, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences.

Peru was hit by a magnitude 6,7 earthquake with its epicenter in Ayacucho. Authorities are monitoring the situation but no significant damage has been reported.

The body was buried inside a canal, resting on its left flank, with the skull facing the pyramid and the Pacific Ocean, archaeologists said.
