Pittsburgh's third baseman appears to have avoided significant injury after taking a pitch to the head.

The Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman had a scary moment in tonight's game.

Pirates third baseman Nick Gonzalez suffered a facial contusion and is day-to-day after being struck on the helmet by a pitch in the fifth inning of Friday's game against the Red Sox.

Nick Gonzales (head) remains out of the Pirates’ starting lineup for Sunday’s tilt against the Red Sox. Gonzales was removed from Friday’s game after being hit on the helmet by a pitch. He passed through the concussion protocol but was held out of action on Saturday as a precautionary measure and will get an extra day on Sunday as well.
